What is a citizens' budget?

'Burgerbegroting' literally translates to 'citizens' budget'. A citizens’ budget allows you and other residents to decide how government funds are spent. The idea behind Burgerbegroting Maastricht is to choose projects submitted by residents and then carry out these projects. In other words, it's up to you!

In Maastricht since 2020

The first Burgerbegroting in Maastricht was launched in 2020, when the municipality of Maastricht and the province of Limburg provided €300,000 of funding. The initiative was a success, so the municipality increased the budget available in the next edition to €750,000 in 2023. The projects selected in the 2nd edition were carried out in 2024.

The municipality made €750,000 available for Burgerbegroting Maastricht 2024. This was supplemented by the remaining funds from the 2nd edition, bringing the total budget for projects to €798,452. Selected projects will be implemented in 2025.

What's important to us

  • Residents take the lead and make the decisions. Burgerbegroting Maastricht provides the space, resources, and support to turn great ideas into reality.
  • Everyone is welcome to take part – whether you take part online or attend the final event. It doesn’t matter if you submit an idea yourself or vote on other people’s project ideas; your voice counts.
  • We do our best to reach as many different residents as possible, including those in neighbourhoods where (almost) no projects have been carried out so far.
  • We believe in giving residents the chance to really get together. That’s why we organise a physical final event where people meet and vote on submitted project proposals.
