2024 Burgerbegroting themes and budgets announced

For the third edition of Burgerbegroting Maastricht (Maastricht Citizens' Budget), residents will be able to propose projects under four main themes, with a total budget of nearly €800,000 available.

Themes and budget allocation 2024

In 2023, residents could choose from ten themes for their project proposals. However, the overlap among these themes often led to confusion regarding the correct categorisation of each project. To address this, several themes have been consolidated into four themes in 2024.

The themes and budgets for 2024 are listed below.

1

Arts, culture and community associations in the neighbourhood

(combined themes of 2023: Street art and cultural displays in public spaces; Future-proofing community associations; Supporting community culture spaces, incubators, studios)

€185,000
2

Stronger together

(combined themes of 2023: Activities to build social connections in the neighbourhood; Inclusion for all; Caring for each other)

€230,000
3

Greening the neighbourhood

(combined themes of 2023: Urban farming and community gardening; Attractive streets and squares; Greening parks and streets)

€280,000
4

Sport and physical activity in the neighbourhood

(2023 theme: Local sports pitches and play areas)

€103,452
 Total€798,452

The budget for 2024 has been set at €798,452, which includes an additional €48,452 carried over from 2023. Each theme has been allocated a portion of the total budget, with amounts allocated based on insights from the first two editions.

Reflection and adjustments

In December 2023, residents decided which projects from the second edition would be implemented. Adjustments were made based on past experiences after two editions. Many successful projects have been realised with the support of Maastricht Burgerbegroting. However, there is always room for improvement, leading to several changes as we approach the next edition.

For instance, the themes and theme budgets for 2024 have already been decided upon, resulting in fewer events. An easier project submission process is being introduced in the municipality's new online grants portal. Efforts are being made to to bring more attention to the Burgerbegroting (Citizens' Budget) in districts where few or no projects have been submitted so far, and to diversify the group of people proposing a project. In addition to voting during the physical closing event, online voting will be available for those unable to attend the final event in person, enabling them to join the decision-making process. These changes have resulted in revised regulations.

Project submission

Residents of Maastricht can submit projects for the third edition of the Burgerbegroting (Citizens' Budget) between 19 August and 15 September 2024. Online voting and a physical closing event will follow in early 2025. All votes combined will determine which projects will be implemented in 2025.
